Leaving a Spiritual Inheritance

A recent Wall Street Journal editorial sheds light on the personal and spiritual importance of taking responsibility for our lives — a sentiment repeatedly espoused by the renowned theologian and Trappist monk Thomas Merton, as we previously outlined in his work No Man is an Island.

Entitled “God, Parents and the ‘1619 Project’” (9/10/20), Latasha Fields, co-pastor of Our Report Ministries & Publications in Chicago and a member of 1776 Unites, encourages parents to play a lager role in educating children and passing on a morally sound, spiritual legacy.

Her statement below is a reminder of our role as God’s creatures, and is worth meditating on:

We must hold ourselves accountable and build communities that teach the next generation how to live meaningful lives. Parents have the ultimate responsibility to train and educate their children. God designed the family as an expression of his spiritual truths, to reflect his image and fulfill a critical role on Earth. It is the mind and will of God for parents to demonstrate morality and a practical way of life—leaving a spiritual inheritance to their offspring. Only parents, not the government, can ensure that this critical knowledge will be carried from generation to generation.
